Help & FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about Deletable.

Getting Started

How do I add my first note or photo?
From the Vault tab, tap the + button in the bottom-right corner. Choose Note or Photo, add your content, then select a deletion timer. Tap Save and your item is encrypted and added to the vault.
What does the deletion timer mean?
Every item has a built-in expiry date. Once the timer runs out, the item is permanently and irrecoverably deleted — both from the vault and from your device storage. You can set timers from 60 minutes up to 6 months, or pick a custom date.
Can I change the timer after I've saved an item?
Yes. Open the item and tap the timer badge at the top of the card to edit the expiry time.
How do I set up biometric unlock or a passcode lock?
Go to Settings → Security → Lock App and toggle it on. Deletable uses Face ID or Touch ID on iOS and fingerprint on Android by default. To use a 4-digit PIN instead, tap Lock Method and select Passcode. Both options lock the app on the same screen.

Deletion & Recovery

Can I recover a deleted item?
No. Deletion is permanent and irrecoverable by design. Once an item expires or you delete it manually, there is no backup or recovery path. This is a core privacy feature, not a bug.
What happens if the app isn't open when an item expires?
Deletable registers a background fetch task that runs periodically (about every 15 minutes on both iOS and Android, subject to OS scheduling) to purge expired items. Your items will be deleted even when the app is closed.
Will I get a warning before something is deleted?
Yes, if you enable Expiry Reminders in Settings → Notifications. You'll receive a push notification — e.g. "Meeting notes" deletes in 1 hour — either 1 hour or 24 hours before an item expires, depending on which option you choose.

Security & Encryption

Is my data really encrypted?
Yes. Every note and photo is encrypted with AES-256 before being written to the local SQLite database. Your master encryption key is stored in the iOS Keychain on iOS, or the Android Keystore on Android, and never leaves your device.
Does Deletable sync to the cloud?
Your vault content never leaves your device. Deletable only syncs anonymous, aggregated statistics (item counts, bytes freed) to our Supabase backend — tied to a random UUID, never your identity.
What data does Deletable collect?
We collect fully anonymous stats: total items deleted, bytes freed, current tier, and vault sizes. These are linked to a random device UUID generated at first launch — not your name, Apple ID, Google account, or any identifying information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does Deletable hide my content in the app switcher?
Yes. iOS shows a privacy overlay with just the app logo instead of your vault contents while the app is backgrounded. On Android, Deletable sets FLAG_SECURE so the OS blanks the preview in the recents view and also blocks system screenshots while the app is open. Expiry notifications are redacted on both platforms — the alert reads "A note or photo deletes in X" rather than showing your item title on the lock screen.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
All vault content is stored locally and will be removed with the app. The anonymous UUID stored in Supabase will become orphaned but contains no data that can identify you.
Will I keep my leaderboard position if I delete and reinstall the app?
No. Deletable uses an anonymous device ID stored in secure storage to track your leaderboard position. On both iOS and Android, this ID is lost when the app is deleted — on iOS, the Keychain is cleared when the last app from a developer is removed; on Android, secure storage is always wiped on uninstall. There is no account system, so there is currently no way to recover your leaderboard position after deleting the app.

Features

How do folders work?
Folders let you group items with a custom name, color, and icon. You can also set a default deletion time per folder, so new items added to that folder automatically use that timer. Tap the folder icon when creating or editing an item to assign it.
What is location context?
When enabled in Settings, you can tag a note with a physical location. Deletable will remind you about the note when you arrive at or leave that location via a geofence notification.
Does the Dynamic Island feature work on my device?
Dynamic Island live activities require iPhone 14 Pro or later. On other devices, the setting is visible but has no effect. Full Live Activity support requires an EAS (Expo Application Services) build.
How do I share my stats?
Go to the Stats tab and tap the Share button at the top right. Deletable generates a styled PNG image showing your tier, items deleted, bytes freed, and more — ready to share anywhere.
Can I save content from Safari or Photos into Deletable?
Yes. Deletable includes a Share Extension. In Safari, tap the Share button and choose Deletable to save a URL as an encrypted note with a deletion timer. In the Photos app, select a photo, tap Share, and choose Deletable to add it directly to your vault.
Can I add a note or photo directly from my home screen?
On iOS, long-press the Deletable app icon on your home screen and tap Add Note or Add Photo — the shortcut launches the app directly into the new-item flow. On Android, add the Deletable widget to your home screen for a live countdown to your soonest-to-expire item; tap the widget to open the app.

Troubleshooting

Items aren't being deleted in the background.
Both iOS and Android can delay or throttle background tasks based on battery level and usage patterns. On iOS, make sure Background App Refresh is enabled for Deletable in Settings → General → Background App Refresh. On Android, exclude Deletable from battery optimization in Settings → Apps → Deletable → Battery → Unrestricted (the exact path varies by device). Opening the app occasionally helps the OS learn to run the background task more reliably.
I'm not receiving expiry notifications.
Check that notifications are enabled for Deletable in your device Settings → Notifications (or Apps → Deletable → Notifications on Android). Also verify that Expiry Reminders is toggled on in Deletable → Settings → Notifications.
The app asks for biometric unlock every time I open it.
This is expected if Lock App is enabled and Lock After is set to "Immediately." Change the Lock After setting in Settings → Security → Lock After to give yourself a grace period.
